Music festival plans 2021

After 18 tough months when most people could not fully socialise and enjoy culture and in which the music sector was particularly affected, we are pleased to confirm that Naked City Festival is returning to Beckenham Place Park this year after a successful inaugural year in 2019. The promoter, Krankbrother, is also bringing two other music events to the park – City Splash and Hospitality - Weekend in the Woods.

All plans are being scrutinised by Lewisham’s Events Safety Advisory Group (ESAG). The process is progressing well, and assuming all requirements are met, including Covid measures, September will round off a wonderful summer at BPP.

The events

Naked City – Saturday September 11th

A one-day festival with a backyard feel and a multi-cultural line-up, bringing together a broad spectrum of music lovers.

City Splash - Sunday September 12th

A celebration of reggae music, Afro-Caribbean food, and high-vibe culture which has had a huge presence and influence on London culture for the last 60 years.

Hospitality, Weekend in the Woods – Saturday September 18th & September 19th -

A showcase of the best of Drum & Bass, with street food and craft beer treats, and the unbeatable Hospitality Atmosphere.

The events will be attended by up to 8,000 festival-goers per day, and the organisers are committed to keeping any inconveniences to local residents to a minimum by working closely with Lewisham Council and local stakeholders

The event organiser

Krankbrother have been operating events for 15 years. They have 35 events, eight of which are festivals, operating in 2021 and have a respectful relationship with all councils and local authorities across a number of boroughs. Krankbrother maintains professional and customer relationships as a priority.

Overview of the events

Naked City Festival took place in BPP in 2019 and the plan is largely the same, although this year the date was moved from July to September due to Covid restrictions.

The other two events are new but the production team is the same and Krankbrother is committed to minimise disruption to local residents during the period. Measures include:

· Working again with a reputable noise management company, Vangardia

· A new and bigger team security team

· Added a traffic management team to help within the park

· More trackway and ground protection

· Better signage both within the park and leading to it

· Improved Ingress / Egress procedures to limit the impact on residents

· Improved lighting on external routes

· Adding toilet facilities along Ingress and Egress routes to minimise public nuisance

The park has evolved since their last event here in 2019 and Krankbrother is working with all park stakeholders to minimise the impact on other activity in the park.

As part of their commitment to the park, Krankbrother have carried out an ecology survey to ensure they work within the park's boundaries. Any reinstatement of the grounds will take place straight after the last event at a cost to the organiser.

Covid safety plans

As any event organiser, the promoter has to supply a Covid Management Plan. Once the guidance has been officially released by the government they will review the plan and consider any additional Covid specific measures as required.

Sustainability plan

A no single-use plastic scheme is operated at the events and Krankbrother have worked closely with Lewisham’s local ecology officer to protect the sensitive woodland wildlife from disturbance. Naked City and Lewisham Council are in discussions about a local tree-planting project funded by a portion of ticket sales.

Contribution to the local community and local economy

Aside from the hire fee which will be spent in the maintenance and management of the park, events of this scale bring other benefits such as

· Several staff hired to work on the event especially on security, crew and bars are from South London

· Local hospitality outlets see a significant upturn in business

· South London food traders are prioritised

· A percentage of profit will be donated to local charities

Supporting local culture

In the last year and a half, the people of South London have been starved of cultural events.

Events such as these give families and young people an opportunity to have fun in a safe environment due to exhaustive health and safety planning.

The events also support artists and the wider entertainment industry which has been under huge pressure. Naked City and City Splash’s line-ups reflect the cultural diversity of South London with many local artists participating in the shows.
